Cairo Governor Galal Saeed said 40 solar-powered lampposts have been placed in Matareya Square, a solution that will later be applied in other Cairo squares, if it proves to be successful.
The cost of the lampposts is estimated at LE600,000, they are eco-friendly and and aimed at easing the load on the capital's electricity grid, according to the Governor.
The new lampposts will also prevent street vendors from stealing electricity from the installations.
