Dozens of microbus drivers protested on Thursday outside the Giza Governorate Headquarters, denouncing an increase in their annual taxes, which amount to over LE2000 (US$333).
According to eyewitnesses, the protesters blocked traffic on Haram Street in the north of Cairo, and police intervened to break up clashes between the protesters and pedestrians.
The microbus drivers also complained of the heavy fines imposed on them for traffic violations, some as high as LE50,000. They claimed also that they are forced to pay a daily LE30 bribe to the police.
