Committee: Mubarak’s communication cuts led to more deaths in revolution

President Hosni Mubarak's deliberate communication cuts in Cairo and other governorates on 28 January 2011 led to more deaths and injuries that day as protesters clashed with police, Mohsen Bahnasy, member of a fact-finding committee on protester deaths during the revolution, said Sunday.

The committee submitted a report on the incident to prosecutors, Bahnasy said, adding that Mubarak, his former interior minister and the minister's aides would receive more severe punishments in their retrial for the killing of protesters before the Court of Cassation Sunday, if the prosecution acknowledges the report.

"That the court agreed to retry them means the previous ruling of the criminal court was legally invalid," Bahnasy said.

He also said the encrypted channel that broadcast the Tahrir demonstrations to Mubarak, according to the report, proves that he was not just an instigator or an accomplice in the killing of demonstrators, but that he was an active perpetrator of that crime.

“The retrial opens the door again to hold him accountable for all charges that have been proved on that day,” Bahnasy said.
