In a closed session on Sunday, the Supreme Constitutional Court heard a petition submitted by the justice minister requesting interpretation of clauses in the law that pertain to the appointment of female judges to the State Council. The minister asked if the word "Egyptian" mentioned in the law includes males and females as well.
After a two-hour deliberation, the court said it would announce its verdict next Tuesday.
In a related development, some 150 women’s rights organizations staged a vigil before the State Council on Women’s Day to protest the State Council General Assembly’s decision to ban the appointment of female judges.
