US-based expatriate Coptic activist Michael Mounir said on Saturday that Egyptians are worried about any religious group taking power in Egypt.
He told reporters in Alexandria that the Muslim Brotherhood has a right to be present in Egypt’s political scene as it represents a segment of Egyptian society, but regarding fears of a Brotherhood member becoming president, he said that the possibility worries both Copts and Muslims.
Mounir said he is opposed to any religious group ruling Egypt, and contended that Egyptians also reject the idea of sheikhs and priests ruling the country.
Finally, he said that Egypt’s Coptic leader Pope Shenouda III will not discuss the Coptic diaspora’s problems. Considering them part of Egyptian society, he demands treating the issue as an internal affair.
