Court resumes Battle of the Camel trials

Judge Mostafa Hassan Abdallah of the Cairo Criminal Court will resume Tuesday the trial of 25 defendants, including several senior former regime figures, who are accused of orchestrating a bloody attack on pro-democracy protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square in February 2011.

On 2 and 3 February 2011, dozens of men riding horses and camels stormed protests demanding the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak. The attacked killed at least 11 and injured thousands. The case came to be known throughout the media as the Battle of the Camel.

The court will hear arguments from the defense lawyers of other suspects . On Monday, it heard the case of defense lawyer of former MP Ehab al-Omda, who demanded the exclusion of anecdotal evidence included in the prosecution's petition, describing it as “contradictory and flawed,” as well as the acquittal of his client. The lawyer also said investigators had failed to name the victims injured in the attack and had described the suspects in their petition as “unknown.”
