Egypt approves political party to be led by former NDP figure

A party presided over by the former secretary general of the disbanded National Democratic Party (NDP), Hossam Badrawy, was approved by the Political Parties’ Affairs Committee on Monday.

Judicial sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the Union Party can now be politically active.

Badrawy was in charge of education issues at the formerly ruling NDP before being appointed its secretary general by then-President Hosni Mubarak on 5 February, after the party leadership, including Gamal Mubarak, were sacked.

A veteran NDP leader, he resigned less than a week later, rejecting the brutal way security personnel had dealt with protesters.

Egypt's revolutionary youth fear that parties formed by loyalists of the former regime could get into the new parliament through the elections slated for November.
