Egypt’s Arab Contractors company has begun construction of two fishing ports in the Shalateen and Abu Ramad areas of the Red Sea governorate.
The company is currently building the piers of the two ports after concluding an environmental study followed by the necessary modifications.
Egypt Transport Minister Hisham Arafat said Tuesday that the fishing port in the city of Abu Ramad will be built on an area of 70,000 square meters at an estimated cost of LE120 million and is expected to serve 1450 ships. The Shalateen port will be built on an area of 150,000 square meters at an estimated cost of LE150 million, Arafat said.
The Red Sea Ports Authority and the National Organization for Military Production signed on Tuesday a cooperation protocol for the development of Red Sea ports and the establishment of the two fishing ports in Shalateen and Abu Ramad.
Arafat said that the National Organization for Military Production will establish two factories, each with a capacity of 20 tons per day, two water desalination plants, three treatment plants for waste, fuel stations, electricity generators, equipment and electromechanical works for the two ports at a cost of LE30 million.
Minister of Planning, Follow-up and Administrative Reform Hala al-Saeed said in October that the ports project is worth a total of LE270 million.
The Halayeb Triangle, which includes Halayeb, Shalateen and Abu Ramad, is a source of tension between Egypt and Sudan. Sudan accuses Egypt of occupying the territory, while Egypt says it is rightfully under its sovereignty.
