Egypt finalizes plans for Grand Egyptian Museum opening

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting on Monday to follow up on the progress of development work in the areas surrounding the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and preparations for its opening.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister indicated that Monday’s meeting is to follow up on the latest developments in the GEM and the surrounding area in preparation for its opening soon, noting in this context the directives issued by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, President of the Republic, to follow up on the latest developments in the museum and the surrounding area, and to start preparations for the opening of this great edifice, which contains many archaeological treasures that tell the story of the ancient Egyptian state.

He added that the directives also include following up on various works related to the coordination of the site, as well as the integration of mass transit means leading to the museum, in a way that contributes to the ease and ease of movement and access to the museum, in addition to following up on the situation regarding the completion of the development work of the visual image of the ring road, and the latest developments related to this project.

Madbouly noted the importance of having a comprehensive picture of the various development works in preparation for the grand opening of this world-class museum, in a way that reflects the size of the Egyptian state and its civilization.   

The Prime Minister indicated that the official opening date of the GEM will be agreed upon, and various procedures and steps will be implemented for this historic opening of this unique edifice, including preparing invitations for senior officials and reviewing the scenarios for the opening ceremony.

He affirmed that this meeting aims to prepare a final vision to be presented to Sisi, regarding the proposed opening date and the scenarios for the ceremony.

Counselor Mohamed Al-Hamsani, the official spokesperson for the Cabinet, stated that the meeting reviewed the status of the ongoing work at the museum in preparation for the opening, which includes completing the remaining works in the halls of King Tutankhamun and transferring some artifacts, in addition to some works of museum display showcases, and resuming some of the remaining finishing works in the Solar Boats Museum building.

The spokesperson indicated that the meeting also reviewed the executive status of the development projects in the area surrounding the museum, including the implementation of green spaces, aesthetic designs, development of squares, lighting and irrigation networks, as well as the project to improve and develop the visual image of the ring road in Cairo and Giza governorates.

The meeting also witnessed a review by the ministers and officials concerned of the status of the development of the surrounding roads, various mass transportation means, as well as the developments made in the Sphinx Airport during the recent period.

Counselor Mohamed Al-Hamsani explained that the meeting discussed a number of proposals regarding the arrangements for the opening of the GEM, including launching a massive promotional campaign for the date of the opening event through all national entities and Egyptian missions abroad, and ensuring the readiness of the areas surrounding the museum and the capacity of hotels in the area to accommodate guests from kings and heads of state, in addition to ideas about the personalities invited to the opening.
