Egypt imports 10 million tons of wheat for the first time

For the first time in modern history, Egypt is importing between nine and ten million tons of wheat after the cultivated areas so far reached 3.6 million feddans, Reda Mohamed Ali, head of the National Wheat Campaign at the Ministry of Agriculture, said.

Egypt is working to improve the level of plant and animal production, including wheat production, on directives from the political leadership, Ali said.

The total area of ​​wheat cultivation last year amounted to about 3.4 million acres.

“There is no cause for concern about the strategic stockpile of wheat, given the that available stocks cover between four and five months.

In addition the new harvest season has started, which is [will provide wheat] covering until the end of the current year,” Ali added, during a phone call with journalist Sarah Hazem, on dmc channel.

Ali pointed out that Egypt may expand wheat cultivation and implement incentive policies to support farmers and encourage them cultivate wheat.
