CAIRO, Oct 3 (MENA) – Former European Commission president Romano Prodi praised Egypt for its persistent and tireless efforts to establish security and stability in the Middle East.
Prodi, who also served as Italian prime minister, emphasized Egypt’s crucial role in the region, citing its popularity, strategic location, and historical significance.
In statements to MENA, the former European Commission president commended Egypt for providing refuge to people fleeing from conflicts and for its efforts in offering assistance to neighboring countries, as well as its potential role in future reconstruction and development efforts.
He highlighted the complexity and difficulty of the current situation in the Middle East, pointing out the various ongoing crises, including the wars in Gaza and Lebanon, the escalation between Israel and Iran, as well as the deteriorating situation in other countries, including Sudan.
Prodi stressed the urgent need for a global peace conference to secure fair solutions, while acknowledging the challenges due to the upcoming US presidential elections.
He emphasized the importance of diplomatic dialogue and the involvement of major global powers, including China, in resolving international crises, particularly in the Middle East.
The former European Commission president expressed regret over the lack of consensus among European countries on critical issues and called for diplomatic efforts to stop the bloodshed and achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
He emphasized the interconnected nature of conflicts and the potential for positive steps to lead to further progress.
“There must be a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East,” Prodi concluded. (MENA)
