Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, US issue joint statement on restoring security, peace in Sudan

CAIRO, Sept 13 (MENA) – The foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States have issued a joint statement on restoring peace and security in Sudan.

The statement was issued following intensive consultations among the four countries over several weeks as part of the international quartet’s efforts to end the ongoing war in Sudan and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.

In a statement on Saturday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Egypt’s keenness to join this initiative stems from its firm stance in support of the unity and sovereignty of the brotherly country of Sudan, as well as its commitment to preserving Sudan’s national institutions.

It added that Egypt seeks to contribute to the swift restoration of security and stability in Sudan, which will enable the return of displaced people to their homes and the recovery of their normal lives while protecting the state’s resources.

The joint statement stressed that Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity are essential for peace and stability.

The foreign ministers called for a humanitarian truce, for an initial three months, to enable the swift entry of humanitarian aid to all parts of Sudan, to lead immediately to a permanent ceasefire, then an inclusive and transparent transition process should be launched and concluded within nine months to meet the aspirations of the Sudanese people towards smoothly establishing an independent, civilian-led government.

The ministers agreed to closely follow up the implementation of these timelines and affirmed their readiness to exercise their good offices and carry out all necessary efforts to ensure the full implementation by the parties concerned, including to reconvene to discuss further steps.

The ministers also agreed to cooperate with the Arab League and the African Union to achieve the advanced goals, as well as to continue their meetings at the ministerial and sub-ministerial levels to support efforts to stop the war in Sudan, and to hold a ministerial-level meeting on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the General Assembly in New York during the current month of September.

The ministers expressed support to efforts by Saudi Arabia and the United States, through the Jeddah process to achieve a permanent ceasefire in Sudan, as well as the efforts by Egypt with regards to the Sudanese civil and political forces forum which held its first round in Cairo during July 2024.

Egypt underlined its commitment to effectively participate in all regional and international efforts aiming to support Sudan to restore its security and stability. (MENA)
