Foreign Affairs Minister Nabil Fahmy welcomed the Syrian National Coalition's decision to participate in the Geneva II conference, to be held on 22 January, in order to negotiate a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
The solution will include the establishment of a transitional authority with full powers to fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people and safeguard Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Fahmy said in a press statement on Sunday that participation in the Geneva II will be the first step towards a solution and called for the continuation of negotiations in good faith. He also called for dialogue to continue between different forces and currents of the opposition to achieve more compatibility among them about the desired objectives of the negotiating process.
Fahmy said he would head to Geneva on 22 January and hoped that this historic opportunity to end the tragedy of the Syrians would not be wasted. He stressed that Egypt will be present during and after the conference to provide all possible support to the negotiation process through its contacts with the parties involved in the negotiation or through convincing the regional and international powers of the need to resolve this crisis without further delay.
