Egyptian court upholds verdict allowing divorced Copts to remarry

Egypt's Court of Administrative Justice on Tuesday upheld an earlier judicial ruling allowing Coptic Christian divorcees to remarry.

The ruling, which obliged Coptic Pope Shenouda III to grant permission for second marriages among Copts, was initially issued in May by the Supreme Administrative Court.

The pope, citing biblical injunctions, has traditionally refused to condone second marriages among his flock.

Shenouda later appealed the May verdict at Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court, which had overturned the ruling following heated controversy between the state and the Coptic Church.
