Egyptian footballer Ahmed Refaat has passed away in the early hours of Saturday aged 31.
The Modern Future and Egypt national team winger succumbed to illness following heart issues that led to his collapse on the pitch after a league match against Ittihad Alexandria.
The official Facebook page of the Modern Sport FC has issued a statement regarding the passing of Refaat, attributing his death to a sudden and severe deterioration in his health.
The player’s health issues first unfolded during a league match against Ittihad Alexandria several months ago.
He experienced a cardiac arrest on the pitch, requiring immediate medical attention. After regaining consciousness, Refaat remained in an induced coma for several days.
He was initially admitted to a hospital in Alexandria, where he remained for 14 days until regaining full consciousness on March 11.
The player was then transferred to a hospital in Cairo for further treatment and monitoring.
Refaat spent several weeks in the hospital under close medical supervision. He was eventually discharged on April 11 but continued to receive medical treatment and underwent daily sessions on a pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat.
