Egyptian, Greek FMs discuss Gaza ceasefire proposal

CAIRO, Aug 19 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty and his Greek counterpart George Gerapetritis held a telephone conversation to discuss Egypt’s intensive efforts to secure a Gaza ceasefire, ensure humanitarian access, and arrange the release of captives and detainees.

During the talks, Abdelatty said that progress had been made on the proposal put forward by US envoy Steve Witkoff, which Hamas has accepted, stressing the importance of pressing Israel to agree to ease the humanitarian crisis.

He also praised Egypt’s strong ties with Greece and reiterated his interest in enhancing economic and investment cooperation, building on his visit to Athens earlier this month.

The two ministers also discussed Greece’s upcoming membership of the UN Security Council in 2025–2026 and reviewed the situation in Gaza.

For his part, Gerapetritis commended Egypt’s role in seeking a ceasefire and reducing suffering in Gaza. The talks also covered the Ukraine conflict, with both ministers voicing support for diplomatic efforts to end the war and restore European stability. (MENA)
