Egyptian team to do maintenance on Gaza electricity station

An Egyptian team will do maintenance work on an electricity station in Gaza over the next three weeks, Kanaan Ebeid, head of the Palestinian Energy Authority, said Tuesday.

State-run news agency MENA quoted Ebeid as saying that the team includes five engineers from the Electricity Ministry. The team headed to Gaza on Monday.

The station that will undergo maintenance was established by Egyptian engineers, according to Ebeid. He mentioned that the maintenance is especially needed now because power consumption increases in the winter.

The Gaza Strip suffers an electricity deficit estimated at 35 percent of required usage. This is expected to increase by 5 percent this winter, Ebeid said.

He also commended Egyptian efforts in supporting Gaza’s electricity sector.

The Gaza energy authority announced at the beginning of the week that periodic maintenance work will continue to take place at Gaza’s electricity-generating station. Power production will temporarily decrease by 25 percent until maintenance finishes.

Electricity costs in Gaza, which frequently suffers from shortages, are estimated at US$18 million a month.
