Egyptian TikTok influencer under investigation for setting herself on fire to boost views

The Giza Public Prosecution has launched an official investigation into an incident involving an Egyptian social media influencer who set herself on fire during a live broadcast on the TikTok application.

The individual remains hospitalized under police custody.

The Ministry of Interior identified the woman, confirming she is a homemaker with a prior criminal record residing within the jurisdiction of the Abu Nomros Police Station in the Giza Governorate, Masrawy reported.

During official interrogation, the woman confessed to the act, attributing her behavior to severe psychological distress and a motive to gain sympathy from her online followers.

Subsequent detective investigations revealed that the suspect was experiencing an acute mental health crisis fueled by accumulating debts totaling approximately LE 60,000, which she could not repay.

Investigators concluded that these financial pressures prompted her to orchestrate the incident in an attempt to gain public sympathy and go viral online.

The investigation reports indicated that the content creator doused her clothing in gasoline before setting herself ablaze on the live stream.

The act resulted in critical injuries, with severe burns covering over 70 percent of her body. She was immediately transferred to a medical facility where she is currently detained pending further legal proceedings.
