Egypt’s photojournalists call for protection at poll

Egyptian photojournalists urged on Saturday security forces to ensure their safety during their coverage of the parliamentary election scheduled for Saunday.

The 2005 parliamentary poll witnessed violence against reporters, especially photojournalists, with one losing his eye and another falling into a two-month coma after receiving a blow to the head.

“Security forces must ensure the full protection of photojournalists and their equipment even if they happen to be stationed in violent locations in accordance with the Egyptian law and the UN Charter,” Egypt’s Photojournalists Committee said in a statement.

They also called on the state to facilitate the work of photojournalists at poll stations, adding that the Egyptian Constitution gives journalists the right to access information.

They further expressed the hope that photojournalists will this year emerge without any injures or losses.
