ElBaradei calls for canceling constitutional referendum

Candidate for the upcoming presidential elections Mohamed ElBaradei has called for canceling the referendum on the proposed constitutional amendments, which is scheduled for 19 March, on the basis that the political street in Egypt is divided over it.

ElBaradei had already announced his rejection of the amendments, demanding a whole new constitution for the country.

On his Twitter account, he said: “In light of deep division re referendum it's cancellation is in national interest. Unity & clarity of vision are key at this stage.”

Opposition forces are divided over the controversial constitutional amendments. The leftist Tagammu Party had called on voters to reject them, while the Muslim Brotherhood, which announced its first political party under the name of “Freedom and Justice” said it will vote for the amendments.
