Would-be candidate in next year’s presidential election Mohamed ElBaradei on Tuesday met with US Ambassador to Egypt Margaret Scobey and other European ambassadors at his home, where he discussed Egypt’s domestic political situation.
“The meeting was at their request,” said the former International Atomic Energy Agency director. “I talked to them about the need for change in Egypt.”
According to US embassy sources, the embassy is interested in meeting with personalities that could potentially play a role in Egyptian political life in the near-term future.
ElBaradei is scheduled to travel abroad on Thursday to attend conferences in a number of different countries.
His supporters, meanwhile, have decided to step up their public-awareness campaign in the provinces. They say ElBaradei now has more than 15,000 backers willing to endorse his nomination for the presidency.
