Eleven bodies lifted from waters off Alexandria, one remains missing

Egyptian search and rescue teams on Saturday morning lifted an eleventh body out of the waters off Alexandria, one of 12 people who drowned at al-Nakheel Beach in the city’s Al-Agamy district.

Twelve people drowned at the beach, which is known locally as the “Beach of Death,” at dawn on Friday. The victims entered the beach to swim, defying Egyptian Cabinet’s decision to close public beaches as a preventive measure against coronavirus.

The family of the victim, a young man named Ayman Saad from Abu al-Matamir in Beheira Governorate, identified the body on Saturday.

“My beloved came out of the water,” Saad Gharib, the victim’s brother, said on his Facebook page.

Prosecutor Mahmoud Zaghloul ordered an urgent investigation into the incident, in preparation for summoning officials for interrogation, and authorized the burial of the victims’ bodies.

He also ordered an intensification of the search for the body of the remaining victim, a young man named Shady from Kom Hamada, Beheira.
