EU delegation to visit Egypt for police reform

A delegation of security experts from the European Commission will visit Egypt next week, an official from the EU’s Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

The delegation will hold talks with Egyptian officials on possible European support for Egypt's efforts to reform its security apparatus, the source said.

The European Commission supports Egypt’s aim to restructure the police as part of the country's progress toward democracy, the source said.

Meanwhile, rights activists in Egypt are calling for the dismissal of Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy.

Egyptian police have been accused of suppressing protests during the 25 January revolution. Several police officers currently face charges for their alleged involvement in killing protesters.

Activists also call for appointing a civilian interior minister with a background in law.
