The EU delegation to Egypt, the Transport Ministry, the International Cooperation Ministry and Egyptian National Railways will kick off the project, which will be funded by the EU with 1.3 million euros.
Through cooperation between the EU and Egypt, the project will work to apply safety regulations on Egypt's railway system that conform to EU standards. The project is expected to be completed in June 2017.
Egypt's maintenance of its railway system has come under fire recently following a series of accidents, some of which have been deadly.
A train derailed near Beni Suef on the Aswan-Cairo line on February 11, injuring 70 people. Prior to that, a train accident in Ayyat, Giza on January 31 killed seven people after a train collided with a pick-up vehicle.
There were 640 train accidents in the first half of 2015 that killed 42 people. Both statistics mark an increase compared to 2014, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said in its December report on car and train accidents.
