Extreme heat, high humidity, and severe dust storms expected across Egypt on Saturday

The Head of the Climate Change Information Center at Egypt’s Agricultural Research Center, Mohamed Ali Fahim, announced a severe heatwave warning expected across the country over the coming hours.

Fahim explained that weather maps from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) indicates that hot to extremely hot conditions will persist across most parts of the nation.

This will be accompanied by significant wind activity capable of kicking up sand and dust over widespread areas, including Greater Cairo, the Delta (Lower Egypt), the northwestern coast, Sinai, the Red Sea, and Upper Egypt, with wind gusts potentially reaching speeds of 50-60 kilometers per hour.

He added that rising humidity levels will make it feel one to two degrees hotter than the actual recorded figures, and double negative impact on both humans and agricultural crops.

The Head of the Climate Change Information Center noted that expected temperatures will range between 37C and 39C in Greater Cairo, 39C to 41C in Northern Upper Egypt, and between 41C and 42C in Southern Upper Egypt.

Fahim emphasized that the most dangerous aspect of the current weather pattern is not just the high temperatures, but the hot, dust-laden winds.

These conditions accelerate water loss in plants and increase heat stress on crops, in addition to the potential for physical and mechanical damage to certain open-field crops and greenhouses.
