An EgyptAir flight took off Monday to Aleppo in Syria, the first such one since Egypt halted flights to the restive Arab state three days ago over security warnings of instability near the Damascus and Aleppo airports.
Company sources told MENA that flight 723 departed with only 21 passengers, and is scheduled to arrive in Damascus in the afternoon.
The sources said EgyptAir decided to resume flights after consulting the Foreign Ministry and the company’s Syria bureau.
On Sunday, Roshdy Zakaria, the head of EgyptAir, said in a statement that the decision to resume flights “comes after coordination with the Egyptian Embassy in Damascus and the EgyptAir office in Syria, and making sure the security conditions are stable at the moment in Syria, especially on the roads leading to the Damascus and Aleppo airports.”
EgyptAir was one of several foreign airlines to suspend flights Friday, when Syrian air force jets bombarded rebel targets close to Damascus airport.
