Five people die from collapsing shaft during illegal artifact excavation in Egypt

Five people were killed in Egypt on Friday when a shaft collapsed on them as they were illegally excavating for antiquities.

The Assiut Security Director, Wael Nassar, received a report from the governorate’s emergency operations room regarding the collapse of a deep pit on several people who were digging for artifacts beneath the mountainous area.

Security officials and detectives immediately rushed to the scene of the accident, accompanied by ambulances and civil defense forces.

Rescue teams continue to work amidst challenging conditions to recover the bodies from under the rubble, while security forces have cordoned off the area.

An official report has been filed regarding the incident, and the Public Prosecution has been notified to begin investigations and take the necessary legal measures to uncover the circumstances of the accident.
