Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s firm position on respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and the preservation of the unity and integrity of its territories, expressing rejection of any interference in its internal affairs and support for its national institutions, as well as the efforts of the Somali federal government to combat terrorism and impose the country’s sovereignty over its entire territory.
This came during a meeting he convened with Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Federal Republic of Somalia, on the sidelines of the Riyadh-hosted Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit.
The top Egyptian diplomat expressed keenness to continue coordination with his Somali counterpart to follow up on the outcomes of the tripartite summit grouping Egypt, Somalia and Eritrea, and the bilateral summit between Egypt and Somalia, which were held on October 10, 2024 in Asmara, and to maintain the pace of consultation regarding issues of mutual interest.
He confirmed Egypt’s keenness on strengthening the structure of peace and security on the African continent, especially in the Horn of Africa region, which is a matter of high priority in Egyptian foreign policy, due to its direct connection to Egyptian national security.
In this context, he stressed keenness to support stability and security in the region and to contribute to the new peacekeeping mission of the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), within the framework of Egypt’s fulfillment of its responsibilities in maintaining regional peace and security in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter, the Constitutive Act of the African Union, and the Charter of the Arab League.
He pointed that from this standpoint, Egypt supports the Somali brothers in the field of building security and military capabilities, in light of the extensive experience that the Egyptian side enjoys in this field, in addition to its extensive experience in combating terrorism and extremism.
For his part, the Somali minister highly appreciated the Egyptian support for his country in fighting terrorism, protecting its sovereignty and defending the unity and integrity of its lands, extending the thanks and appreciation of the leadership, government and people of Somalia to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the government and people of Egypt.
