Foreign Ministry: Al-Anany’s landslide victory in UNESCO election marks new achievement

CAIRO, Oct 7 (MENA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the landslide victory of Egypt’s Khaled al-Anany in the UNESCO Executive Board elections marks a major achievement to be added to the a distinguished record of Egyptians who have held leadership positions in international organizations and specialized agencies over the decades.

These leading positions assumed by Egyptians include secretary-general of the United Nations, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), director general of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), director-general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and others.

In a statement Tuesday, the ministry said that the selection of Egyptian diplomats and specialists for these high-ranking positions reflects the efficiency of Egyptian cadres and their ability to make valuable contributions to multilateral work.

This also underlines the international community’s appreciation of Egypt’s position and its leading role in supporting peace, security, stability, and development, the ministry added. (MENA)
