The Administrative Supervisory Authority has filed a complaint with the Public Funds Prosecution against Sayed Meshaal, the former minister of military production, citing irregularities in contracts.
The contracts in question were for the technical development of ammunition and a detergent production line.
Investigators with the authority said that Meshaal gave verbal instructions to award the contract at LE33 million above cost.
Meshaal was minister of state for military production from 1999 until 2011. He was first elected as an MP for the now-dissolved National Democratic Party in 2000 and served for nearly 10 years.
During Meshaal’s tenure as minister of military production, protests by workers in the factories belonging to ministry were met with an iron fist.
In August 2010, a court issued suspended sentences against five workers at a military production factory after they organized a protest to call for better safety precautions inside the factory. The military prosecution charged them with rioting in a military zone and assaulting the factory’s chairperson. Plots of land on which military factories are built are dubbed military zones.
