Former presidential chief of staff still in detention despite court ruling

Former Presidential Chief of Staff Zakariya Azmy  remains in Tora prison despite a court ruling that ordered his release on bail Tuesday, security sources have said.

An Egyptian court ordered his release on LE200,000 bail after his detention pending investigations was extended for the maximum possible period of 45 days.

Assem al-Gohary, head of the Justice Ministry authority that is interrogating Azmy, petitioned against his release ordered by the Nasr City Court of Appeals.

The Criminal Court will examine the appeal against Azmy's release on 19 May. Until then he will remain in the prison.

Gohary said the authority believes Azmy should remain in prison, citing concerns he may contact witnesses to alter their testimony and compromise investigations.
