Former Shura Council Speaker Safwat al-Sherif has paid LE3 million in compensation to the State Funds Prosecution for the value of the gifts he received from state-owned newspapers Al-Ahram and Al-Akhbar, according to his lawyer Gamel Saeed.
Sherif went to the prosecution office Wednesday and handed over checks for LE3 million, receiving a quittance later from the judge supervising the case, his lawyer said.
Additionally, State Funds Prosecution head Mohamed al-Naggar approved a payment from former President Hosni Mubarak’s sons Alaa and Gamal Mubarak for LE12 million for similar gifts they had received from state-run newspapers.
The government has recently reached several legal settlements with Mubarak-era officials in return for them repaying illegally-attained funds.
Public Prosecution spokesperson Mostafa Deweidar said prosecutors are currently mulling several other reconciliation requests from businessmen with ties to the former regime.
