The party will choose its candidate for the 2011 presidential elections in a general conference to be held next year, said Gamal Mubarak, son of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and assistant secretary-general of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), on Monday.
The younger Mubarak, who is widely believed to be the party's candidate for next year’s presidential elections if his father decides not to run, did not indicate whether the party has decided to field him in the elections.
The Egyptian Constitution allows political parties to nominate members of their executive committees for elections.
President Hosni Mubarak, 82, has not yet announced whether he will run for a sixth term next year, and his son continues to avoid questions as to the possibility of running in his father’s stead.
Gamal Mubarak led discussions at a ruling National Democratic Party conference that took place over the past three days. They dealt with various topics related to the party’s government instructions after recently concluded parliamentary elections.
