Ganzouri meets with US deputy secretary of state in Cairo

Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri met with the United States deputy secretary of state in Cairo Thursday, state-run news agency MENA reported.

Ganzouri and the senior diplomat, William Burns, who arrived in Cairo on Tuesday, discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations between Egypt and the US in the wake of the 25 January revolution.

The US State Department had said in a Tuesday statement that Burns would discuss Egypt's economic challenges, as well as US support for Egyptian democracy and civil society.

Burns met with head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussein Tantawi on Wednesday, as well as Mohamed Morsy, chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP).

The US seeks to maintain its partnership with Egypt during this critical phase, MENA quoted Burns as saying.

The US is committed to supporting Egypt through aid programs during this phase of its democratic transition, Burns added during the meeting, which was also attended by the US Ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson.

Burns added that he has encouraged donor countries across the region and around the world to support Egypt.

Egyptian Trade and Industry Minister Mahmoud Issa is scheduled to hold talks with officials in the US next week about Egypt’s economic crisis. The US has not sent Egypt humanitarian aid since the outbreak of the revolution, although American officials had promised to assist the countries of the Arab Spring, especially in the fields of investment and trade, Issa said in a press statement Tuesday.

Ganzouri said in a press conference last month that Egypt has yet to receive a penny of the US's promised aid.
