Govt to establish airport security company

Egypt will establish a special company to take over airport security, Aviation Minister Hossam Kamal said in a news conference on Monday, days after it signed an agreement with a British company to assess and advise on airport security measures.

All security agencies operating at airports at present will be involved in the company's creation, the minister told reporters, adding that it will have its own “private regulations for how it governs security measures at airports”.

He pointed to the recent signing of a six-month agreement with Control Risks to assess security at airports in Cairo, Sharm el-Sheikh and Marsa Alam.

Pressure has mounted on Egypt to tighten security at its airports following the downing in Sinai of a Russian passenger plane in October that killed 224 on board and is believed to be the result of an IED planted by Islamic State affiliates.
