Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint on Sunday, in the Tawil district, 15km north of the city of Arish in Sinai. They exchanged fire with police for an hour and a half, resulting in the wounding of two people.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers were intercepted by the police, who believed them to have stolen cars, while a security source said the gunmen were members of were Islamist groups.
Arish has been the scene of a recent security crackdown by police and military troops.
In related news, a security source said on Monday that 15 more suspects in the recent attack on the Arish police station have been identified. They are members of Islamist groups and smugglers of counterfeit currency, according to the source.
