Rafah–Engineers building the steel barrier along Egypt’s 14-kilometer border with the Hamas-run Gaza Strip have reportedly deployed heavy machinery to remove a deposit of underground rocks that had impeded construction of the wall in four areas along the frontier–namely, the el-Dahinia and Sarsourya districts and the northern and southern termini of the Rafah border crossing.
Engineers reportedly had to bring in heavy winches and hammers that had not been necessary for construction of other sections of the wall.
Construction works were temporarily halted previously after Egyptian workers and their machines were allegedly shot at by Palestinians on the far side of the border. They were also briefly halted when the northern Sinai Peninsula was hit by heavy floods last month.
