Hundreds perform funeral prayer for Alexandrian victim

Approximately 600 people have performed a funeral prayer at the Sidi Gaber Mosque for 28-year-old Khaled Saeed who was allegedly killed by Alexandrian police on 6 June.

The same group also staged a protest in solidarity with the victim’s family following the prayer.

Amnesty International has urged Egypt to conduct an immediate, comprehensive and independent investigation into the killing. Several activists have called for a protest at 5 PM today in front of the Ministry of Interior to demand an end to police torture and the conviction of the policemen involved in the alleged incident.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior issued a statement yesterday claiming that Khaled Saeed had previously evaded two prison sentences, and when he saw the two policemen, the young man panicked, swallowed a marijuana roll, and choked to death. According to the statement, a forensic report verifies Saeed’s cause of death from choking, and does not report that the victim’s body had any external injuries.

The statement further added that the photos disseminated on the internet are those of the dead body after it had been examined and dissected.
