The Turkish Anadolu news agency has quoted Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as saying that he met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy on Saturday, who told him that he and two representatives of the National Council for Human Rights visited deposed President Mohamed Morsy on Friday, but did not brief him of more details.
This is the first time a meeting with the deposed president is announced.
Ihsanoglu inquired about the clashes in Rabaa al-Adaweya Square on Saturday morning, where dozens were killed, but Fahmy said he had no precise information about the number of victims.
Ihsanoglu stressed that what happened that morning is unacceptable, hoping that the Egyptian parties step on the road of reconciliation so as not to shed more blood in the holy month of Ramadan, and calling on them to leave the squares and start political dialogues.
On the possibility of holding a meeting of the OIC council, Ihsanoglu said this requires an invitation from the member states, pointing out that he had already stated the willingness of the secretariat of the organization if invited to convene, and reminding of his earlier comments about the OIC desire to play a constructive role with the Egyptian parties.
Ihsanoglu pointed to a continuation of the meetings with the various parties He proposed that Egypt devise a constitutional system as soon as possible, and hold free and fair elections that reflect the will of the people.
