Imams expelled by State Security demand to be reinstated

Dozens of imams and Islamic preachers who were expelled by the dissolved State Security Investigations Service under the Mubarak regime staged demonstrations before the Ministry of Religious Endowments on Wednesday, demanding to be reinstated.

They threatened to go on hunger strike if their demands are not met.

The protests followed demonstrations by imams and Islamic preachers outside Al-Azhar on Tuesday, demanding that the Islamic institution be made independent of the government, and that its grand sheikh be elected and not appointed.
