Information minister pleased with trial broadcast

Minister of Information Osama Heikal said on Wednesday he ordered the crew responsible for airing former President Hosni Mubarak's trial to focus on Mubarak behind the bars.

Mubarak is being tried along with his two sons, former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and six aides.

Gamal and Alaa Mubarak tried more than once to hide their father from cameras and Alaa motioned to the cameraman to keep the camera away from his father.

The trial was held in Police Academy in the Tagamo’ al-Khames area north of Cairo.

Authorities gave state television the exclusive right to broadcast the trial.

“I asked the director to focus on Mubarak,” Heikal said in a statement to DPA Wednesday.

I followed the trial not only as information minister, but with the feeling of an ordinary citizen, said Heikal.

There were 11 cameras and a crew of 90 people responsible behind the broadcast, he said, adding there was another crew in Sharm el-Sheikh to film Mubarak leaving the hospital there en route to Cairo.

Heikal said he was proud of the performance of the crew and he intended to reward its members.
