Inspectors from the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade found and confiscated over 182,000 tons of food unfit for human consumption in the past three weeks in a series of inspections, the ministry said.
Ahmed Abbas, head of the Domestic Trade Sector at the ministry, said Saturday that the seizures included meat, fish, poultry, cheese, milk, juices, mineral water, canned food and oils. The inspections were conducted on shops, restaurants and large hotels, according to the Middle East News Agency.
The ministry also seized 130,776 counterfeit food items, in addition to knockoff auto parts, electrical appliances, clothes and electrical equipment that posed a threat to public health and safety.
The ministry also turned in nearly 600 violators of health and safety laws after the raids, asking them to be referred to prosecution.
