The Interior Ministry has agreed to pay a total of LE10 million in compensation for the torture of 840 members of the militant Gamaa Islamiya (GI) group, which fought President Hosni Mubarak’s regime during the 1980s and 1990s.
The move comes within the context of a 1997 reconciliation agreement signed between the government and the GI, by which the latter vowed to abandon all militant activity.
Sources say the ministry will begin paying out the compensation next week.
