Interior Ministry fined LE1 million for torturing detained actress

The Cairo Court of Appeal has fined the Interior Ministry LE1 million for torturing actress Habiba during her detention when she was wrongly accused of killing her husband in 1999.

Habiba admitted to the crime after undergoing torture for eight days and was sentenced to ten years in prison. She served five years before the perpetrators of the murder were arrested.

Mohamed Zarea, Habiba’s lawyer, said this is the largest compensation in the history of the judiciary.

Zarea added that he established his argument on several points to establish her rights for compensation, including the officer’s violation of his duty to protect life and law enforcement. Zarea argued that he should have conducted the necessary investigations to catch the perpetrators and bring them to justice, instead of torturing her to admit to a crime that she did not commit.
