IPU chief arrives in Cairo

Saber Hossain Chowdhury, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, arrived on Friday in Cairo coming from Turkey on top of delegation in his first visit to Egypt since he was elected three months ago.

Informed security sources at airports said Chowdhury arrived on Egyptian airlines from Istanbul accompanied by several IPU officials.

Chowdhury is expected to meet with many Egyptian officials to tackle special arrangements made for the parliamentary elections slated for March and what could the union offer to Egypt at such stage.

Chowdhury, who was a political prisoner in Bangladesh, won presidency of IPU at the 131st session of the general assembly in October succeeding the Moroccan Abdel Wahed Abdel Rady.

According to their website, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is an international organization that works toward world-wide parliamentary dialogue and advocates for representative democracy.
