Attorney Yasser Fathi plans to submit a complaint to the International Labor Organization on behalf of the employees of Islam Online. Fathi argues that the Qatari businessmen who are managing Islam Online’s investments in Egypt have violated the law and the rights of their employees. He will also submit a report to the public prosecutor and file a lawsuit against the Qatari administration for allegedly violating articles of the agreement signed between the Ministry of Manpower and for withholding payments to employees wishing to resign.
The administration reportedly still owes LE12 million in payments to more than 270 Islam Online employees.
In a statement two days ago, Fathi said the administration has gone back on its pledges to help pay off their loans as well as compensate those who were forced to resign following their probationary period. These commitments were reportedly included in an agreement signed on 28 March 2010.
Following the signing of the agreement, the Egyptian Ministry of Manpower Aisha Abdel Hady said the number of workers wishing to resign will be determined and their payments will be distributed immediately.
Employees wishing to continue their work will receive their regular salaries, except those who took out loans. Those who took out larger loans will be allowed to work out a proper payment plan, she added.
