Army forces have reinforced security measures at all entrances of Cairo and at main squares in anticipation for fresh rallies called for by supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsy, marking one month since the bloody dispersal of pro-Morsy, Islamist sit-ins at Rabaa al-Adaweya and al-Nahda squares.
The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, a Muslim Brotherhood-led alliance of Islamists opposed to Morsy’s removal by the army early July, had called upon supporters to go out in massive rallies following the Friday prayers, said state TV website, Egy News.
The group said it plans door-to-door campaigns to convince citizens that the 30 June revolt against Morsy was a military coup, as well as to urge citizens to take part into a civil disobedience promoted by the group earlier.
Brotherhood leader at large, Essam al-Erian, in a recorded video clip, sent “greetings to the people who remain devoted to the martyrs and proceed with their revolution”. He urged youths to take part in the demonstrations for the sake of “ freedom and dignity.
In Alexandria, the Muslim Brotherhood said marches will set off from the Tawheed, Qaed Ibrahim, and Sidi Beshr mosques.
