Founding Jama'a al-Islamiya leader Karam Zohdy has called on leaders of the National Alliance in Support of Legitimacy to apologize to the Egyptian people for past mistakes under the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Salah Sultan, an Islamic preacher and leading figure of the Muslim Brotherhood, previously said an apology would mark a first step towards reform. “They should seriously follow Sultan’s call and stop the violence,” Zohdy said on Tuesday.
“Hassan Malek said this is up to the group leaders to decide,” Zohdy said. “So I asked him to let me see Khairat al-Shater in prison but he has not answered me yet.”
“The Brotherhood must renounce violence and halt demonstrations,” he added. “This would make them look better to the Egyptian people and the regime.”
“I will propose to them to drop their demand for the reinstatement of the elected institutions in exchange for not excluding them from the political process."
Khaled al-Zaafarany, a former leading figure of the Muslim Brotherhood, said that he met with the group leaders twice to ask them to end the tone of incitement in the hope Egypt's security forces would halt arrests and might even release Islamist prisoners.
“I also told them they must apologize to the Egyptian people for their mistakes throughout the past two years,” he said.
