Journalists sentenced to prison over offending Interior Ministry

North Cairo Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced each of Reda Edward – chairman of the privately-owned Dostour newspaper; Saeed Mohamed Wahba – former chief editor of the newspaper; and Hussein Mahmoud – journalist at the newspaper; to three months in prison and LE20,000 fine for publishing false news on the Interior Ministry.

The Interior Ministry earlier filed a lawsuit against the newspaper after it published news that the ministry deemed false.

The ministry saw several phrases in the published news as an offense against it, such as “return of the interior ministry’s injustice and [its practice of, ed.] offending the dignity of citizens.”
