Journalists’ Syndicate to participate in June 10 strike

The Journalists' Syndicate has announced its solidarity with journalists who plan to strike on June 10, the day of the journalist, to protest the poor financial climate, according to syndicate head Yehya Qalash. He added that the syndicate will have a symbolic role in the event.

"I called on chairman of the freedoms committee Khaled al-Balshy to adopt the call through the committee and the council of the syndicate," said Qalash.

Balshy stressed during a meeting recently that the committee was negotiating with the management of many newspapers over the arbitrary dismissal of journalists, Qalash mentioned..

Balshy called on journalists to take part in the strike to demand the improvement of their financial and social situations.

Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Press and journalist Ibrahim Eissa said: "The timing of the strike is inappropriate and will cause confusion. The dismissals' issue is too complex to resolve in a partial strike."

"It needs research and the establishment of a set of guarantees," he added.

Eissa said a fund to secure journalists against unemployment should be developed.
